![]() So, is this vintage Murakami or more strange ideas gone badly wrong? Somewhere in the middle, of course – for more details, step this way…įirst Person Singular (translated by Philip Gabriel) is a collection of eight stories first published in Japan back in 2020, and those with a keen eye for freebies may have already tried a few of them, as several have appeared at The New Yorker and elsewhere. ![]() However, that’s not to say that I wasn’t looking forward to getting around to the latest book, and after a random purchase of the paperback earlier this year, I allowed myself the luxury of a review-free read before trying it again a couple of months later. ![]() ![]() While I’ve been enjoying Haruki Murakami’s writing for decades now, my admiration for the writer has certainly cooled a little after a few less-than-stellar books, and I don’t really rush to source and review his new releases anymore. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Laake married Monty in an arcane ceremony whose esoteric details are zestfully described here pledged to wear ``garments'' (a kind of sanctified nightgown) for the rest of her life and began what most Americans would consider a bizarre life that included the recycling of condoms through vigorous washing. Moreover, the author intended to wed not any man but ``the One''-the marriage partner predestined by God-and when she began to doubt that one narrow-minded but extraordinarily persistent suitor, Monty Brown, was the One, Monty and Laake's own brother rushed to her side to exorcise ``the devil'' that had invaded her soul. Though Laake is now a professional journalist, she was raised in a Mormon family and sent to Brigham Young University with one paramount aim: to find and marry ``a faithful Mormon man.'' Without such a marriage, plus the guidance that only a devout husband could provide, she would ``be denied access to the highest level of Mormon heaven''-just one of the many unusual aspects of the emphatically patriarchal religion that Laake reveals here. A candid, often startling memoir of the author's life as a Mormon wife. ![]() ![]() This is the person who has power over recess or no recess, for goodness sake. Was is it intended to show students how important their teacher is? Or was it intended for future teachers to give them a pep talk about how much of an influence they can have on future generations in their classroom? If it was intended for a younger audience to make them appreciate their teacher, I don't find this lesson, and thus would not pick it to read to them, needful as most elementary students I know are in no doubt as to their feelings about their teacher positive or negative. In truth though, I was confused about the intended audience of this book. ![]() The illustrations evoke memories of the Little House on the Prairie books with the simplicity of line and water-washed illustrations of pioneer life.
