Slowly, Callie begins to understand that she blames herself for her little brother’s illness and she begins to make real progress. At first her reasons for cutting still remain allusive. Callie begins to delve into memories of the first time she cut herself and then into other memories of family life. Slowly, Callie seeks out help, primarily from her therapists and then more slowly from the other residents. She is at the facility to get help but she can’t bring herself to talk or interact with anyone. The novel begins with Callie at the Sea Pines Residential Treatment Facility.
